Catholic Clerics Should Be Among The First To Defend Innocent Life

“Every individual, precisely by reason of the mystery of the Word of God who was made flesh (cf. Jn 1:14), is entrusted to the maternal care of the Church. Therefore, every threat to human dignity and life must necessarily be felt in the Church's very heart; it cannot but affect her at the core of her faith in the Redemptive Incarnation of the Son of God, and engage her in her mission of proclaiming the Gospel of life in all the world and to every creature.” (cf. Mk 16:15).

These words, written by St. John Paul II more than thirty years ago in Evangelium vitae, resound with special intensity at the Santa Creu i Sant Pau Hospital in Barcelona, Spain, on the day when the Church celebrates the Incarnation of the Son of God in the Immaculate womb of the Most Holy  Virgin Mary.

The problem here is not the hospital, where there are skilled professionals and a staff highly motivated to care for the sick. The problem lies with the Barcelona Cathedral Chapter, which forms part of the Most Illustrious Administration of Santa Creu i Sant Pau Hospital, alongside the City Council and the Generalitat of Catalonia.

It is the canons of the Chapter who have refused to implement, through Santa Creu i Sant Paul Hospital, a support service for mothers facing difficulties—without offering them alternatives to abortion.

It is the canons of the Barcelona Cathedral who have, for years, allowed abortions not performed at San Pablo to be referred to other hospitals.

And now, it is the canons of the Cathedral Chapter who—at the behest of the Catholic president Salvador Illa—will allow the very same staff from the Santa Creu i Sant Pau Hospital to perform these abortions at the neighboring Dos de Mayo Hospital.

For years, the Cathedral Chapter has permitted the performance of sterilizations and euthanasias, thereby contravening all principles of Catholic morality: the defense of human life from conception until natural death. It is the Canons who are charged with safeguarding the right to life within the Most Illustrious Administration of the Hospital of Saint Paul. They possess the power to exert influence. Let them exercise it!—for decisions there are made by unanimous consent.

This Holy Week, let the Canons set aside their scarlet ceremonial vestments and their processions. Let them bear witness to the Gospel of Life within the Most Illustrious Administration of Sant Creu i Sant Paul Hospital, and let them ascend the cross of persecution, humiliation, and ostracism. In doing so, they will prove themselves true disciples of the One who, one day—with power and glory—will come to judge us by our deeds.

“Cada persona, precisamente en virtud del misterio de la palabra de Dios hecha carne, es confiada a la solicitud materna de la Iglesia. Por eso, toda amenaza a la dignidad y a la vida del hombre repercute en el corazón mismo de la Iglesia, afecta al núcleo de su fe en la encarnación redentora del Hijo de Dios, la compromete en su misión de anunciar el Evangelio de la vida por todo el mundo y a cada criatura”.

Estas palabras, escritas por Juan Pablo II hace ya más de treinta años en su encíclica Evangelii vitae, suenan con especial intensidad ante el Hospital de “la Santa Cruz y San Pablo de Barcelona” en el día de la encarnación del Hijo de Dios en las entrañas inmaculadas de María Santísima.

Porque aquí el problema no es el hospital, donde hay buenos profesionales y un personal altamente motivado en el cuidado de los enfermos. El problema es el cabildo de la catedral de Barcelona, que forma parte de la Muy Ilustre Administración del hospital del San Pablo, junto al Ayuntamiento y a la Generalitat de Cataluña.

Son los canónigos del cabildo los que se han negado a implementar desde el hospital de San Pablo un servicio de atención a las madres con problemas, sin ofrecerles alternativas al aborto. 

Son los canónigos de la catedral de Barcelona los que han permitido durante años que se deriven a otros hospitales los abortos que no se realizan en San Pablo. 

Y ahora son los canónigos del Capítulo de la catedral los que, a instancias del católico presidente Salvador Illa, permitirán que el mismo personal del Hospital de San Pablo, realice sus abortos en el vecino hospital Dos de Mayo. 

El Capítulo de la Catedral ha permitido durante años que se realizaran esterilizaciones y eutanasias, contraviniendo así todos los principios de la moral católica: la defensa de la vida humana desde su concepción hasta su muerte natural. Son los canónigos quienes deben velar por el derecho a la vida en la Muy Ilustre Administración del Hospital de San Pablo. Tienen capacidad de presión. ¡Que la ejerzan!, pues las decisiones se toman por unanimidad.

En esta Semana Santa que los Sres. Canónigos se dejen de capisallos encarnados y de procesiones. Que den testimonio del Evangelio de la vida en la Muy Ilustre Administración del Hospital de San Pablo y suban a la cruz de la persecución, de la humillación y del ostracismo. Así serán verdaderos discípulos de aquel que un día, con poder y gloria, vendrá a juzgarnos por nuestras obras.
